Deadbolts or deadlocks: It’s easy to take your home’s safety for granted. 2.1% of households in Australia are burglarized and the households that are, usually have poor security in place. Most burglars come in through unlocked doors and windows or through forced entry.
The unfortunate fact of life is, nobody ever expects to have their home or business broken into, but it could happen to anybody.
Give your house the safety it deserves with deadbolt locks
Luckily, there are simple but effective ways to dramatically increase the security of your home. Outside of making sure that your doors and windows are locked, the most important thing is to make sure you have the best kind of locks installed. And if you want the best: nothing beats the deadbolt.
What Are Deadbolts And How Do They Work?
A deadbolt (also called a deadlock) is a locking mechanism characterized by its requirement of a key to extending its bolt into the door jam and strike plate of the door frame. Simply put, a key is required to bring the lock into open position, which is distinct too and far safer than the spring bolt locks and other locks, which can be much more easily tampered with or opened with force.
Generally, the deadbolt lock is used in conjunction with a turning knob on the inside of the door, with the use of the key on the outside.
Types of Deadbolts Locks
Types of deadbolts can vary. A widely used deadbolt is the single cylinder. It is mounted inside of the door with the key cylinder on the door’s face and the turning knob on the interior side.
The double cylinder has a key cylinder on both sides of the door, meaning a key is required for both entry and exit. The advantages are that an intruder can’t break through any glass in or around the doorframe and reach in and turn the interior door knob. The disadvantages are a speedy exit in the case of an emergency will require a key, so it is recommended to have an easily accessed key nearby.
Another common deadbolt variation is the keyless deadbolt which has the same internal mechanism except using a keycard or code to activate it.
The vertical deadbolt is mounted at the top of the door, meaning that if even if an intruder wanted to attempt to pry it open, they can’t simply by nature of its position.
