Why keys break
Brass wears. Every turn takes a little off the key, and after years of use the blade thins at the shoulder until one cold morning it lets go. Keys that have been copied from copies wear faster, because each copy is slightly off and rubs harder in the lock.
What we do
- Extract the broken piece with proper key extractors, without forcing the lock.
- Check the lock still turns freely, and service it if the break has left debris inside.
- Cut a new key, from the pieces or from the lock.
Before we get there
- Don’t try to grab it with tweezers or pliers unless a good length is sticking out
- Don’t use glue. It never works and it ruins the lock
- Keep the other half of the key. It makes cutting the new one easier
Common questions
The key snapped and half is stuck in the lock. What now?
Leave it. Don’t poke at it with tweezers or superglue; that pushes it deeper and can jam the lock for good. Call us and we’ll extract it cleanly.
Can you cut a new key from the broken pieces?
Usually, yes. If both halves are there we cut a new key from them. If part is missing, we can often cut one from the lock itself.
Will removing it damage the lock?
No. Broken key extraction is done with fine tools made for the job. The lock stays on the door and keeps working.
