What goes wrong with screen door locks
- Stiff or seized. Along the coast, from Scarborough to Hillarys, salt air gets into the cylinder and the lock stops turning. Sometimes it can be cleaned and lubricated; often the cylinder has to be replaced.
- Triple lock won’t throw all three bolts. Usually a worn mechanism or a door that has dropped on its hinges. We check the door before blaming the lock.
- Handle floppy or snapped. Common on doors that get slammed. Handles and the lock body can be replaced separately.
- Sliding security door won’t latch. The hook lock or the strike is out of line, or the lock is worn. Both are fixable on the spot.
- Lost the screen door key. We can rekey the cylinder, or replace it with one keyed to your front door.
Repair or replace?
If the lock body is sound and it’s just a worn cylinder or a misaligned door, we repair it. If the mechanism is worn out or the lock is an old single-point type, a new triple lock is the better spend, because it’s what the insurance and most people expect on a security door now. We carry the common lock bodies and cylinders in the van, so most jobs are done in one visit.
One key for the screen door and the front door
Most screen door locks can be keyed alike with your front door deadbolt, so the same key opens both. We do that on the spot, and we can add the back door and the side gate while we’re there. See rekeying for how keying alike works.

Common questions
Can you key my screen door to the same key as the front door?
Usually, yes. Most screen door cylinders can be keyed alike with a standard front door deadbolt. We’ll check the two locks are compatible and do it on the spot.
My screen door lock has seized. Does it need a whole new lock?
Not always. If the lock body is sound we can replace just the cylinder. If the mechanism itself is worn, a new lock is the better fix. We’ll tell you which before we start.
Do you fix sliding security door locks too?
Yes. Hook locks, strikes and handles on sliding security doors are all repairable or replaceable at the door.
Should I upgrade an old single lock to a triple lock?
If the door is being relied on for security, yes. A triple lock throws three bolts into the frame instead of one, and it’s the standard on security doors now.
Can you do this on a rental?
Yes. Check with your property manager first, as they usually need to approve lock changes and hold a key.
