Check these first

Is it the batteries?

This is the cause most of the time. Most digital locks beep or flash a red light for weeks before the batteries run out, and the warning is easy to ignore until the keypad goes dead. Change all the batteries at once with fresh ones of the type your manual lists, and don’t mix old and new.

If the batteries are already flat and you’re outside, look for an emergency power point on the outside of the lock. Many models have terminals for a 9V battery or a USB-C port that wakes the keypad long enough to put your code in. If yours doesn’t, use the backup key. If you have neither, call us.

Is the door dragging?

If the bolt moves freely with the door open but sticks or stops when the door is shut, the lock is usually fine and the door has dropped or the frame has moved. The motor can’t push the bolt into the strike, so it stalls and flattens the batteries fast. That’s an adjustment to the strike or the door, not a new lock.

Is the keypad not lighting up or not responding?

Touch the whole panel to wake it, and wipe it clean. Touch keypads can play up when they’re wet, and a keypad in full afternoon sun can get hot enough to misbehave, so give it a few minutes in the shade. If it still won’t light up with fresh batteries, the lock has a fault we need to look at.

Did someone put the wrong code in too many times?

Most locks shut the keypad down for a few minutes after several wrong codes, to stop someone guessing. Wait, then try again with the right code. If a code has been changed and nobody knows the new one, see the reset question below.

Fingerprint won’t read?

Wet, dry or cut fingers are the usual reason. Clean the sensor, use your code or tag instead, and re-enrol the finger when it’s healed.

App or WiFi says offline?

The lock still works at the door with a code, tag or key. Remote features need the lock’s gateway and your home WiFi to be working. Lion Head’s WiFi models, for example, need a gateway hub inside the house, so turn the gateway and router off and on again before anything else.

When it’s more than a battery

  • You hear the motor whirr but the bolt doesn’t move.
  • The handle spins without opening the latch.
  • The keypad is dead even with fresh batteries.
  • The lock has corroded, which we see a lot close to the coast.
  • You’ve lost the master or admin code and the lock needs a factory reset.
  • The lock was damaged in a break-in.

These need a locksmith. We come to you, work out what’s wrong, and tell you the price before we start.

Locked out by your digital lock

We get you in through the backup key cylinder or the emergency power point, without damaging the door wherever we can. In the unlikely event a barrel has to be drilled, we tell you first, then replace the barrel and key it to your existing key at no charge. Once you’re in, we fix whatever caused it so it doesn’t happen again. Our house lockouts page explains what to expect on the day.

Repair, reset or replace?

Repair or adjust when it’s the door alignment, a worn strike, or a battery contact. Reset when the codes are lost or someone who shouldn’t have access still has a code. Replace when the motor or electronics have failed on an older lock, or parts are no longer available.

We fit and service McGrath, Lion Head, Lockton, Carbine, Lockwood and Yale. If your lock is a brand we can’t get parts for, we’ll tell you on the phone and suggest a replacement, or point you to someone who can help. Our guide to which keypad lock suits which door helps if you’re choosing a new one, and the models we fit are on the digital and smart locks page.

How to stop it happening again

  • Change the batteries at the first warning, or once a year, whichever comes first.
  • Keep the backup key somewhere you can get to from outside the house, like the car or with a neighbour you trust. Not under the pot plant.
  • Set up a second admin user or code, so one lost phone or forgotten code doesn’t lock everyone out.
  • Keep the manual, or a photo of the model number, so we can look up the right parts quickly.

Being locked out of a digital lock is rarely an emergency in the middle of the day, but it is at night. We cover all of Perth, Western Australia, 24 hours a day, from our base in Duncraig.

Common questions

My digital lock keeps beeping. What does that mean?

Usually the low battery warning. Change all the batteries now with fresh ones of the type your manual lists. Most locks give you weeks of warning, but not much once the beeping gets frequent.

The batteries died and I am locked out. What do I do?

Look for an emergency power point on the outside of the lock, such as 9V battery terminals or a USB-C port, then use your backup key if it has one. If neither works, call us on 0427 580 823, any time.

Can you reset a digital lock if I have forgotten the master code?

Yes, for the brands we fit. We check your ID and proof that you live there first. The reset is usually done from inside, so if you are locked out we get you in first.

Do you fix digital locks you did not install?

Yes, if it is a brand we can get parts for. If it is not, we will tell you on the phone and suggest a replacement, or point you to someone who can help.

Can a digital lock be opened without damage?

Almost always, through the backup key or the emergency power point. In the unlikely event a barrel has to be drilled, we tell you first, then replace the barrel and key it to your existing key at no charge.
